FAQ's
Thinking about Discipleship Training? The process of hearing God?s voice and stepping out in trust and obedience brings many questions. On this page we try to answer some of the most frequently asked questions to help you take your step of faith.
What is the Urban DTS?
The Urban DTS is a DTS with an urban twist! Instead of being tucked out safely into the countryside, you will be in the midst of the city, engaging in real-life situations, while growing in God and being equipped to be of more and more use as you reach out to this hurting world. This is an active, make-it-happen DTS. If you want to draw closer to God and actively reach out to others in the city, this is the place for you.
What does the average week look like?
For 8 months, we will be here in Derby. Our weeks will be broken up into 2 parts: About 2 days teaching and 3 days outreach. And, of course, we will each have responsibilities to keep the house running (those dishes don't wash themselves, unfortunately!) Weekends we try to keep free, but you never know what opportunity may come up!
What does the teaching involve?
Our desire is to help the DTS to know God at a deeper level. This happens in several ways. Through lectures we stretch our understanding of God, ourselves and the world. Small groups help us process what we're learning to get the max out of the teaching, to share our insights and help each other grow. Ministry times help us to be free to be who the Lord intended us to be. And one-on-one times give us space to share and receive input on a deeper level at our own pace.
What is the outreach?
The best way to see changes happening in our lives is to be put ourselves into situations that challenge us. There is a lot happening in Derby for us to get involved with! YWAM Derby partners with various churches and Christian organisations in the city, including the YMCA, Derby City Mission, and the Derby City Vision churches. For 3 or 4 days a week, we will work along-side people reaching out in Derby. There are a variety of opportunities, from youth clubs and detached youth work, to helping the homeless, and getting to know people of other faiths.
Will we go anywhere else?
Yes, for about a month we will be on outreach in a European city. And there may occasionally be other opportunities outside Derby, as well.
How do I pay my fees?

Is the DTS full-time?
Our DTS is a full-time residential course
Can I bring musical instruments, and will I get a chance to use them?
It would be great if you could bring them. We will be meeting for worship several times a week, and it is always good to use music to worship God! There may also be opportunities to use your instruments during outreach, as well as in-house social times.
Can I come early or late?
We can often work this out on a case-by-case basis. If you are travelling from overseas, it may help to arrive a day or two earlier, to give you a chance to work through jet lag before we start. However, it is really important to be here at the beginning, so please don't plan to arrive late unless you have talked to us about it first!
How much luggage should I bring?
If you bring it you will need to be able to carry it! Be aware than American airlines often cater for a greater luggage allowance than European flights, which usually allow for no more than 23 kilos and a small carry-on. If bringing more than this, plan for this smaller size for the European outreach.
